The Meerut Cantt Railway Station was constructed in 1869, two years after the city Railway station but the building remains nearly the same in all the intervening years. The earliest picture of the station was clicked in 1886 on the arrival of Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught, who stayed in Meerut from 1886 to 1890 and was given a ceremonial welcome at the Cantonment Railway Station. The picture became an iconic one. Interestingly, a brick chimney can be seen to the left as soon as one is about to leave the confines of the Cantonment while driving down Roorkee Road. This brick chimney was erected by the contractor who built the railway stations. The chimney and the field around are now part of Meerut Cantonment and stand as a mute spectator of the bygone era.
