This ancient Lord Shiva temple near Sadar police station of Meerut is linked to Ramayana and is considered one of the oldest temples of Meerut. It is said that Mandodari, the daughter of the demon king Mai, used to worship in this temple every day with a wish in her heart – to marry the most powerful man in the world. Pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva fulfilled her wish and Mandodari was married to Ravan, the king of Lanka. The Marathas who ruled the region briefly in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, rebuilt this temple. No wonder! the architecture of the temple has a reflection of Maratha influence. At present, the premises of this temple houses a Sanskrit College as well.
