Before 1913, Ghantaghar used to be known as Kamboh Darwaza and was originally erected by the Kamboh Nawab Abu Mohammad Khan in the 17th century. In 1913, the most iconic gate of Meerut underwent renovation and the huge clock earlier installed in Allahabad High Court was reinstalled here. There was a period when the entire city used to run on the time indicated by this clock. After independence, the Gate was Renamed Subhash Dwar, after the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. This Gate made of red stone is a popular symbol representing Meerut and in many Indian commercial films whenever there is a mention of Meerut, Ghantaghar pictures generally crop up. During National festivals and other important occasions, the gate is aesthetically decorated.
