ShahPeer Ka Maqbara

Shahpeer’s Maqbara is located on the Hapur Road in Meerut and its construction was ordered by the Mughal emperor Jehangir's wife Noorjahan in 1620. In those days, Meerut-based Sufi saint Shahpeer was quite famous and the queen was particularly worried about Jehangir's excessive drinking habit. Shahpeer had prescribed some medicines when Noorjahan visited him here. Jehangir benefitted from the treatment and the royal couple sanctioned the construction of this famous structure. This mausoleum made of red stone beautifully reflects the Mughal architecture. But this is perhaps the only one building that doesn’t have a dome and Shahpeer’s grave is situated right below the open roof. The incompleteness of this tomb has a story behind it. Mahbat Khan, a general in the Mughal Army, raised the flag of rebellion in Kashmir and the emperor set out with the royal army to counter him even though Shahpeer forbade him to do so. Jehangir was imprisoned. Though, Noorjahan managed to rescue him the emperor died shortly after. And after the change of regime, the tomb could never be completed.
