Bhamashah Park of Meerut earlier known as Victoria Park, has a unique distinction of being connected to the revolt of 1857. It was here that a jail stood which was broken by revolutionaries with the onset of the Great Uprising in Meerut, signalling a direct affront to British colonial authority. Whether by chance or destiny, once again the same spot rose to the limelight in 1946 when the last session of the Indian National Congress before independence was held here. It was at this session that the declaration was made that India would be a free democratic country. Hence this park is often termed as the meeting point of the two streams of the Indian freedom struggle, i.e., violent and non-violent. This podium was constructed for this purpose which was in an utter state of neglect, but renovated in 2006 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Great Upsurge.
