Located in Pedamal Bazaar, Ashok ki Laat was established in the 1950s on top of a structure built over an ancient well. Five such structures were established in Meerut in this decade which are small replicas of the original pillars that the Mauryan emperor Ashoka had erected more than two thousand years ago. This structure at the Pedamal market refreshes the memory of those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. Meerut has a deep connection with Ashoka's Pillar. The Maurya Emperor Ashoka had installed such edicts in many major cities of India, and one of them was Meerut. However, Firozshah Tughlaq removed it from here and transferred it to Delhi in the 14th century.
