Ashok ki Laat (Subhash Bazaar)

Ashok ki Laat in Subhash Bazaar was established in the memory of freedom fighters in the 1950s. This was the time when India became a republic. These pillars are a smaller version of the Ashok ki Laat established by the Maurya Emperor Ashoka 2,250 years ago in major cities of India. A statue of four Asiatic lions was placed on the top of these pillars. Today this statue is the national symbol of India. A pillar was also installed by the emperor in Meerut, which was removed from here and taken to Delhi by Sultan Firozshah Tughlaq in the 14th century. That pillar still stands near the Hindu Bara Rao Hospital in North Delhi.
