Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Tiraha

Veer Chandra Garhwali was born on December 25th 1891 in Pauri Garhwal. In 1914 he joined the British forces and in the following six years fought in various battles in France, Baghdad and Vazeeristan. He is remembered as a freedom fighter because he refused to order his battalion to open fire on the unarmed protestors in April 1930 in Garhwal. He was arrested by the British authorities, tried and given life sentence. However, he was freed 11 years later in 1941, but was not permitted to go to Garhwal. Later, he joined Mahatma Gandhi and was again imprisoned from 1942 to 1945 for participating in the Quit India Movement. It was only in December 1946, Chandra Singh Garhwali was allowed to enter Garhwal.
