This ancient Lord Shiva temple has been an active witness to the country's first war of independence. It was also called Kali Paltan Temple because Indian soldiers in the British Army were named Kali Paltan. As the temple was situated in the Cantonment area, the Indian sepoys used to come here and offer prayers. In 1857, an ascetic instilled the spirit of patriotism among these soldiers. The strategy of rebellion was also prepared here. The spark that arose from here on May 10, 1857, sounded the bugle of rebellion against the British rule in the entire North India. Today Augharnath temple is a centre of religious, cultural and patriotic significance. On Shivratri, lakhs of devotees offer Gangajal on the Swayambhu Shivalinga of this temple
