This Bungalow located in the Cantonment was the official residence of Colonel Carmichael Smith, the commandant of the 3rd Light Cavalry. It is alleged that on April 24, 85 sepoys of this regiment did not obey his order to use the new Enfield rifle cartridges greased with pork and cow fat. Hindu and Muslim soldiers together opposed this order because it directly hurt their religious sentiments. On 9th May, these 85 soldiers were incarcerated for disobedience, an act that triggered the Great Uprising against the British on May 10th 1857. Today this bungalow is used as the Army Mess for the Indian Army officers.
