St. John's Cemetery

This 22-acre cemetery adjacent to St. John's Church houses the graves of thousands of European officers and their families who died over a period of more than 140 years. The gravestones and mausoleums here reflect changing times and architectural preferences. In 1857 during the uprising against the British, about 50 British were killed in the violence in Meerut and most of them were apparently buried in this cemetery. So far historians have been able to find only nine graves, including that of Colonel John Finnis, who was the first British officer to be killed in this rebellion. Apart from the graves, this cemetery also has hundreds of memorials commemorating those British soldiers who died in the battles of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Even today, people from every corner of the world come here to pay homage to the graves of their ancestors.
