St. John’s Church - The garrison church was the first to be erected in the upper provinces of India by the British East India Company. The construction of this church commenced in 1819 and was completed in 1821. The architecture of this building conforms to a style of English Parish Church architecture popular prior to the Gothic Revival. The church was built at a cost of Rs 56,000. Consecrated in 1824, it is the largest church in North India with a seating capacity of 2,000. During the First War of Independence, contrary to the general belief, no violent incidents took place within the precincts of this church, however, the house of worship remained closed for three months until August 1, 1857. The church belongs to the Diocese of Agra, Church of North India. Around 40 Indian Christian families worship in this church, and the medium of worship continues to be in English language.
