Mangal Pandey Chowk

Welcome to the Mangal Pandey Chowk in Budhana Gate Market. The statue of great freedom fighter Mangal Pandey is situated here. Mangal Pandey was born in the Ballia district of UP. In 1857, when he was a soldier in the Bengal Infantry of the East India Company, he raised the bugle of rebellion against the British, due to which he was hanged on April 8. Although all this happened in Barrackpore Cantonment of Bengal, his name has often been associated with the Great Revolt of 1857 that started in Meerut on 10th May 1857. Even a famous Bollywood film had shown him playing an important role in the uprising. Nevertheless, Mangal Pandey is no less than a hero in Meerut. There are several government colonies and institutions named after him in the city.
