Shahpeer Gate

Shahpeer Gate, named after 17th-century Sufi saint Hazrat Shahpeer, is one of the nine gates of the old Meerut. It was built in the mid-17th century and renovated in 1829 by a prosperous landlord of that time. Shahpeer was close to the Mughal emperor Jahangir and on the request of Noorjahan, he had once treated the alcohol-addict emperor. The treatment had a positive impact on the monarch after which the empress ordered to build a mausoleum for Shahpeer. Today the structure is famously called Shahpeer's Tomb. With time this entire area came to be known as Shahpeer Gate. One speciality of Shahpeer Gate is that delicious Sheermaal is prepared here, the sweetness of which attracts people from far and wide.
