Mutiny Gate, located in Meerut's Kesarganj area, once served as the entrance to the Old Jail built by the British. On the evening of May 10, 1857, as the uprising unfolded, Dhan Singh Kotwal, the station officer of Sadar Kotwali, joined the rebels and, with the help of other policemen, attacked the British in the Sadar Bazar area. Later that night, he led the revolutionaries in storming the jail, freeing 836 prisoners and setting it ablaze. The freed prisoners soon joined the revolt. Though the jail is long gone, the gate still stands and now leads to the wholesale grain market.
