More than 150 years ago on 10th May 1857, news arrived at the Sadar Chowk that the British officers had set out to remove the uniforms of the Indian soldiers in the army and confiscate their weapons. It was a Sunday evening and there was a gathering of soldiers in Sadar Bazaar. As soon as this news spread, the people present there attacked the Europeans present there. Policemen led by Dhan Singh Kotwal, the station in-charge of the nearby Sadar police station joined the crowd with swords and the massacre started. On the other hand, Indian sepoys of the army, who were identified as Kali Paltan, attacked the storerooms, and looted weapons and horses from the stables. Soon the prisoners were released from the old jail. And, the first War of Independence began.
